The Illinois football staff continued to change Tuesday when Curt Mallory, demoted from co-defensive coordinator, accepted the job as defensive coordinator at Akron, where Rob Ianello was recently hired as head coach. Mallory’s name had come up in connection with several jobs in the Mid-American Conference, and he was a finalist for the head coaching position at Miami (Ohio) a year ago.
Illinois hired defensive coordinator Vic Koenning in December while also demoting Mallory and co-defensive coordinator Dan Disch to position coaches. Disch turned down the defensive coordinator position at South Florida last season. The only defensive assistant to serve all five seasons in coach Ron Zook’s tenure at Illinois, Disch is a respected recruiter with ties to Florida.
